NAIDOC Week celebrations were held this week at Sacred Heart School Morwell. To celebrate the students participated in a number of activities to recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week gave the students the opportunity to learn about First Nations cultures and histories. This year’s National NAIDOC Week theme was Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!

The activities in the junior grades included learning and singing the song as a class, the well-known song I am, you are, we are Australian and presented it at Assembly. The Students painted and decorated boomerangs by telling stories through symbols and art. While the senior grades listened to a story, Finding Our Heart by well known author Thomas Mayor and illustrator Black Douglas. Students painted hearts to reflect the meaning in the story. In addition, they made and decorated lanterns with Aboriginal symbols. The Grade 3 and 4 prepared and cooked with native ingredients.
