Inquiry Learning

At Sacred Heart Morwell, our aim is to empower students with a well-rounded base of knowledge, skills, and values that will equip them for lifelong learning and active participation in a changing world. We provide a curriculum that is both engaging and dynamic, driven by inquiry and centered around the needs and interests of our students.

Inquiry-Based Learning

Our classrooms are inquiry-rich environments where students are encouraged to wonder, question, explore, and make meaningful connections beyond the school setting. Through Inquiry Investigations, students are guided to become critical thinkers, creative problem-solvers, and active contributors to their learning communities. Each term, teachers plan investigations around broad, conceptual understandings—known as Big Ideas—which encourage students to explore topics in depth and from multiple perspectives.

This approach fosters:

  • Deep questioning and research skills

  • Effective communication and presentation techniques

  • Higher-order thinking and reasoning

  • Real-world connections through community and global contexts

Curriculum Strands

The units of study are developed using the Victorian Curriculum and are delivered through a two-year cycle, ensuring breadth and depth across key learning areas:

  • The Humanities: Geography, History, Civics & Citizenship

  • The Arts: Visual Arts, Media Arts, Dance, and Drama

  • Technologies: Design Technology and Digital Technologies

  • Capabilities: Personal & Social Capability, Critical & Creative Thinking, Ethical Understanding, and Intercultural Capability

These strands support the holistic development of students by blending academic learning with values education, creativity, and personal growth.

Digital Technologies

Digital learning is a key focus at Sacred Heart, with an emphasis on preparing students for the digital demands of the modern world. Digital Technologies are integrated into Inquiry Investigations to allow students to explore, design, and create real-world solutions using modern tools.

Through this, students learn to:

  • Design, create, manage, and evaluate sustainable digital solutions to meet and reshape real-life challenges

  • Effectively use digital systems to automate, transform, and communicate information

  • Express their ideas creatively in contemporary, socially relevant formats

  • Understand the ethical and social responsibilities of digital citizenship, including issues like cyberbullying and online safety

  • Collaborate and communicate locally and globally using digital platforms to solve problems and share knowledge

Access to Technology

To support digital learning, students have access to a variety of devices and platforms, including:

  • Desktop computers

  • iPads

  • Chromebooks

Each classroom is equipped with an LCD screen and shared iPads, ensuring that digital learning is seamlessly embedded into everyday teaching and learning experiences.
